| General Notes:
|
A fine Camperdown elm occupying a prominent position at the corner of Medway St where it meets North Parade.
Aerial imagery from 1945 shows the tree already well-established and casting a substantial shadow, indicating significant age. The tree may be approaching or exceeding 100 years old. The tree has a short grafted stem. Typically, Camperdown scion wood is grafted to wych elm rootstock (U. glabra), but the suckering of this tree suggests that Dutch elm (U. x hollandica) may have been used. This will require ongoing management to maintain the integrity of the cultivar form. Overall, the tree is a notable specimen within the streetscape, valued for its age, form, and contribution to the amenity and character of the immediate area. Christchurch City Council assess identification number is 43123 (Hammer, R.J., 2026) |
