‘These trees were planted by Henry Dell in the 1920’s. He recognised the force of the wind in Waiau Pa, so decided to protect his stock by planting Macrocarpa trees for shelter. Most have been milled to provide fencing and sheds. These 6 comprise the only stand of that size remaining. These trees stand on the boundary, marking the lost locality called Clark’s Road, which according to the turn of the century maps held in the archives of the Land Transfer Office was the early track running from the Clark farm at Seagrove, through the property of Mary E Clark to what we now know as Mckenzie Road. This track, just clay, later became known as Creamery Road when a depot for local cream. Solids were separated from the skim here, then taken by wagonette to Pukekohe. This was located opposite where the first school started. This corner of Clark’s Road was closed, and from 1910 it no longer ran through Mary Clark’s land, which is now, in the year 2002 known as Village Fields. It is shown on a 1916 map as Road Closed’. Additional record material is included in the substantial documentation of archive photos and biographical details of Henry Dell. Flook 2002.
