'This fine healthy tree, an outstanding landmark visible from most of the surrounding territory, was planted by an earlier owner Ted Shaw who moved to Mapua in 1919. He was an active and valued member of the community as mentioned in the book 'The Fruits of Labour ' by Bernard L. Wells of Mapua' (Brown & Eckroyd 1994).
