The Maruia Beech Forest lies alongside State Highway 7 between Maruia Springs and Springs Junction. Mature southern beech forest borders and, in places, forms a canopy over the highway, creating a particularly spectacular drive through this section of the forest. The forest is dominated by red beech (Fuscospora fusca), with mountain beech (Fuscospora cliffortioides) and silver beech (Lophozonia menziesii) also present.

The wider Maruia area has an important association with New Zealand's native forest conservation movement. In 1975, the Maruia Declaration emerged from opposition to proposals for large-scale logging of indigenous forests and became an important milestone in the campaign for greater protection of New Zealand's remaining native forests.

The mature roadside trees provide an unusually accessible experience of the indigenous beech forest characteristic of this part of the northern South Island (Hammer, J.R., 2026).
