| General Notes:
|
Situated within the grounds of St Michael and All Angels Church on Oxford Terrace, this London plane forms an important component of one of Christchurch's most significant historic church precincts. The church site dates from 1851, with the present Gothic Revival church completed in 1872.
The tree is a large, mature specimen with a broad, spreading canopy supported by substantial low scaffold branches. It makes a significant contribution to the landscape character of the church grounds and the Oxford Terrace streetscape. Early photographs indicate the tree was still relatively small in 1910, suggesting a planting date in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century rather than during the establishment of the church. The tree is protected as a notable tree in the Christchurch District Plan (Hammer, J.R, 2026). |
