This blue gum is a prominent feature of Nunweek Park and is protected under the Christchurch District Plan. Located alongside Harewood Road, it has a broad spreading canopy that contributes to the park landscape and streetscape.
Nunweek Park is a 20-hectare sports and recreation reserve in Harewood, originally acquired by the former Waimairi District Council and named after early Canterbury settler Henry Nunweek, who arrived in the 1850s. Today, the park is now recognised as the primary centre for hockey in the Canterbury region. A 1945 aerial photograph shows the tree standing in what was then a predominantly rural landscape, indicating that it substantially predates the establishment of the park (Hammer, J.R., 2026). |
