This variegated elm forms a prominent specimen within Woodham Park, its cream-margined foliage making it distinctive within the park landscape.
Woodham Park occupies the former grounds of a substantial private residence built by stamp clerk John Gwalter Palairet. The property once contained a large ten-bedroom homestead established in the late nineteenth century. After changing ownership several times, the house was demolished in 1941 following repeated vandalism after the surrounding grounds had been opened as public parkland[1]. The elm is likely a remnant planting from the former homestead garden and now survives as part of the historic landscape of Woodham Park, representing an enduring link to the site’s earlier residential history (Hammer, J.R., 2026).
