| General Notes:
|
This variegated or silver elm [1] is an exceptionally large specimen located within a residential property developed circa 1950. The landowner had recently purchased the property and was fond of the tree.
Based on its size, trunk development, and crown structure, the tree is estimated to be between 80 and 100 years old, suggesting it predates the current dwelling. The tree exhibits strong form and vigour for a variegated elm, with a broad, well-established crown and substantial trunk girth. Variegated elm cultivars are typically slower growing and less robust than green-leaved elms, making specimens of this scale uncommon. This tree is considered one of the largest variegated elms observed locally, and potentially within the wider Christchurch area (Hammer, J.R., 2026).
