| General Notes:
|
This is a notable thin-barked (Hall’s) tōtara growing within a small remnant of old-growth, windswept Banks Peninsula forest, often referred to as “goblin forest,” in Ōtepātotu Scenic Reserve.
The surrounding trees are heavily draped with mosses, creating an eerie, atmospheric landscape. The name Ōtepātotu is understood to translate roughly as “place of the fairies,” reflecting the distinctive character of the site (Evans, B., 2026). Reference Department of Conservation. (n.d.).
