| General Notes:
|
A fine example of a lowland historical Kahikatea remnant. This tree displays the largest girdling root I have encountered. While such roots are typically associated with container-grown stock, in this case the formation is perhaps caused by the tree growing around a former obstacle - possibly a larger tree or a boulder -resulting in this unusual and striking feature.
This tree has also been personally significant, serving as the inspiration for one of the tattoos on my leg. Local anecdote suggests it once acted as an anchor point for a large steel net used to catch logs floating down the Nile River. However, there is no visible evidence or injury on the tree to substantiate this claim made by the Nile River Rainforest Train driver (Hammer, J.R., 2026). |
