This western red cedar (Thuja plicata) in the Garden of Tāne is believed to have been planted circa 1880.
While the tree’s provenance is unknown, the earliest recorded reference to the species in New Zealand appears in William Hale’s 1865 Nelson nursery catalogue, where it was listed under its former name, Thuja gigantea, a name commonly used in early horticultural literature before the species was formally standardised as Thuja plicata (Hammer, J.R., 2025). |
