Located at Cheskin Homestead and Orchard, Little River (Banks Peninsula), this tree was planted by the local White family. A 1901 photograph shows the tree already about 2 m tall, indicating its establishment by the turn of the 20th century. The current owner reports that they purchased the property in part because of its fine collection of trees, of which this specimen remains a notable example.
Cheskin Orchard is a historic property near Little River, a rural settlement on Banks Peninsula with origins in timber milling and farming, situated on State Highway 75 between Christchurch and Akaroa. Little River developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a service and agricultural town and remains an active community today (Hammer, J.R., 2025). |
