Tree Information x

Identifier: AR/2173
Tree Type: Single
Registered By: Thompson, V.E.
Registration Category: Historic tree – National interest
General Notes:
This Cedrus libani is a mature, high-quality specimen located within the Buckland War Memorial Reserve. It is historically significant, having been planted on 7 June 1922 by Governor-General Viscount Jellicoe during the opening of the Buckland Community Hall (Auckland Council, Pukekohe–Paerata Structure Plan: Historic Heritage Assessment, n.d.). The tree has therefore held an important commemorative and civic role for over a century.

The cedar displays excellent structural form, strong vigour, and a well-developed crown typical of the species. It is visually prominent within the reserve, contributing substantially to the landscape character, amenity, and atmospheric qualities of the memorial environment. Mature C. libani specimens are uncommon in the Franklin district, further enhancing its botanical and local rarity value (Thompson, V.E., 2025).
