Registration Category: Notable tree/s – Local interest
General Notes:
Taunton Gardens is a notable historic estate in Governors Bay, near Christchurch, with the main house dating from 1852. The early cottage, built from volcanic sandstone and sod, suffered earthquake damage and was later carefully rebuilt by the property’s owner, a respected botanist and nurseryman known for his horticultural work. Within this historic setting, the oak is one of the estate’s most prominent specimens, distinguished by its size and long association with the early development of the garden (Hammer, J.R., 2025).
