Tree Information x

Identifier: CR/2113
Tree Type: Single
Registered By: Lloyd, M.
Registration Category: Historic tree/s – Local interest
General Notes:
This very healthy holm oak is an uncommon tree in New Brighton. It is sited in the grounds of St Faith’s Anglican Church, listed by the Christchurch City Council as a Heritage Place. A wooden church existed on the site from 1886, however this proved too small and in 1924 a new church was built from Port Hills basalt rock with Oamaru stone dressing, with oak and rimu timber featuring inside. Knowledge from parishioners (thanks to Stephen Graham) suggests that the late Ron Cutler, who worked in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, brought seed of the tree over from England. It was planted in May 1937 to mark the coronation of King George VI, though no official ceremony seems to have surrounded its planting. The church is a local landmark, and the tree adds to this, having a robust form only slightly asymmetrical due to the effect of salt-laden easterly winds. It is listed on the Christchurch City Council Schedule of significant trees (Lloyd, M., 2025).
