General Notes:
|
This group of scarlet oaks was planted to mark the Coronation of King George VI and Elizabeth. Many such plantings occurred throughout the country but this was a major one for Lower Hutt. Three thousand people gathered at the civic ceremony on 12 May 1937 at the Hutt Recreation Ground and significant figures of the time were involved in the planting, including Mrs von Zedlitz who was the daughter of W.A. Fitzherbert, the first mayor of the borough [1]. The trees were planted from alongside the grandstand towards the Woburn Rd entrance to the Hutt Recreation grounds.
