This pōhutukawa occupies a commanding corner position in Napier, its broad spread and bulk making a strong visual impression on the area. Believed to have been planted before 1920, it was once part of a private garden before the corner property boundary was realigned to preserve the tree in the road reserve. Up until the late 1960s, the tree was kept heavily trimmed to clear overhead power lines, but following the undergrounding of services, remedial pruning allowed the canopy to return to its natural shape. Despite its earlier treatment, it remains one of the largest pōhutukawa trees in a public place in Napier.
