General Notes:
|
This tree was planted to commemorate the life of Josiah Clifton Firth (1826-1897), a notable pioneer businessman of Matamata. Firth had a brief brush with fame as the messenger between Te Kooti and the New Zealand Government during Te Kooti's War. It is believed to date from the 1939–1940 plantings. It appears to have been pollarded in its youth and is now growing with multiple established stems (Timberland, B. D., 2025).
