General Notes:
|
This tree is the original Pennantia baylisiana cultivated by the late botanist Geoff Baylis (24 November 1913 – 31 December 2003). In 1945, during an expedition to the Three Kings Islands, Baylis discovered what proved to be the only known example of a new species. A shoot taken from that female tree was grown in his Dunedin garden, where it has thrived. The species was formally described in 1948, although it took decades before it was fully accepted as distinct within the genus Pennantia. Cuttings were later taken, and seed propagated from one of the resulting plants, making the species available for domestic gardens (Del Castillo, A., 2025).
