This group of Norfolk Island pines are a well-known feature of the historic Patea Cemetery where burials began about 1869. Twelve are registered as protected trees by the South Taranaki District Council though there are 13 trees in the cemetery. The registration plaques on the trees gives circa 1914 as the planting date, however articles available through Papers Past gives good reason to believe the oldest trees were planted in 1881. Due to some failures attributed to harsh winds other planting occurred up to about 1900 [1]. The trees are very visible on the skyline and are all in good health (Lloyd, M., 2025).
