This fine 18-aside avenue of Canary Island date palms was planted in 1934 during a period when 'The Esplanade' underwent a variety of improvements under Peter Black, who was the Curator of Reserves from 1908-1946 [1].
The palms had only just become established when three years later a vandal deliberately drove over a whole line of the palms during the night. Thankfully only one was lost and the others were all able to be replanted and survive to this day [2].
